The Pit-Monsters Of Pitsmoor
Tales From the Playground
Director: Joe Bunce
Designer: Maeve Black
Stage Manager: Sara Lewis
Location: Pitsmoor Adventure Playground
The Pit-Monsters of Pitsmoor was the first project we did as Tales From the Playground. Across various weekends we delivered a series of free workshops in the Pitsmoor Adventure Playground for children between the ages of 5 and 13.
The theme of the workshops was monsters, and I lead a monster making workshop using materials I had sourced from the local scrap store ‘Scrapdragon’. During the afternoon, we interviewed each child about their monster and recorded the wacky attributes and back stories they had given their creations. This then became the starting point for us during our R&D the following week. We devised a show that took place around the adventure playground, placing the audience as scientists that were there to investigate some strange goings on in Pitsmoor.
After retrieving magical feathers from a snoozing monster, exploring through the forest blind folded with only a rope to guide them, mixing up huge vats of monster jelly and hatching a baby monster the audience learnt a valuable lesson about not judging a book by its cover!
